Forging Dragons By John Howe
John Howe is a fantasy art legend in my mind and one that has created several paintings and art pieces for such iconic imagery of The lord of the rings aswell as several other fantasy worlds and realms.
And forging dragons is his book which delves deep into the dragon design, more like a process of the way he works giving notes and advice on certain techniques and thoughts of each project within his book. With detailed illustrations and sketches throughout he attempts to evoke the atmosphere of diverse dragons and provide a history of sorts to the dragons mythology with extracts from some other sources which serve as examples for which John can illustrate how he tackles a certain dragon in a different way.
One of the most fascinating things about Johns art is that it is easy to get caught up in seeing his artwork being processed and feeling the desire to draw along with him as you are reading. I find this true a lot with some of the other top fantasy artists, that I just want to get started straight away and almost skip past reading the book, but then I realize I have to read on.

The exploration of dragons as myth is the fantasy stuff of dreams and it is the imagination of drawing dragons that appeals to many especially from an artist who seems to do it almost effortlessly.
John Howe is an artist to study if you are interested in the intricacies of watercolour painting as he is a master of watercolour, as I once read a book about the process he used for a Lord Of The Rings Gandalf painting for which he built up lots of glaze layers or washes and created a misty fog effect before creating more detailed shades of paintwork at the foreground with Gandalf being the off centre focal point and here is that painting.

Fantasy Art Inspiration In The World And Influences Around Us
All around us inspiration can be taken from the real life images our eyes capture everyday, these mental images are stored in our computer like brains for lots of creative stuff that we as humans do quite naturally, whether it's making the perfect cup of tea right down to making the bed with origami folded sheets.
Drawing and creating fantasy art comes about when we are drawn to or sucked in by the contagious and inspirational artwork of other artists and then we tend to see realistic looking life landscapes in paintings and the inspired choices that the artists made and combine all these mental images into our own imaginative creations.
To see how other artists do what they do and how they do it is best. But also inspiration can be found within stories, books and lists of words, these are far better to imagine your creations with, something that you read and then conjure up images in your own mind as to what can be sketched on paper.
Medieval history for me is a good source of inspiration especially for castles and knights armour that kind of thing, years back in real history has influence in the future of many created pieces of artwork, whether it be a painting or portrait. Your imagination can be used to exaggerate your influences and make them your own ideas and concepts.

Trying to think of inspiration in fantasy art
I often look for new inspiration in fantasy art, I seem to have a few days when I cannot think of anything to draw.
Or there are certain days when I know what I want to draw but hat does not happen for what ever reason, why does this happen, I know I'm not alone, writers have the same problem, writers block can also be artists block.
How do you concentrate your time into something meaningful, something that will get you the results that you want?
Well here are three of the best ways to do this!
First, always try and draw even if you can't, find some time away from distractions, this is easily achieved by setting up a work space away from kids, away from the television and even the nagging wife ( for the wifes of the world reading this, just give your other half a shiny new toy to play with, a gadget perhaps!!)
Drawings can also be conceptual in design and not that clear, so try and sketch and draw with a simple idea in mind or a collaboration of ideas.
Second, watch what other artists are doing, they see and they create far more in tune with their subject than others, so see them, study them and get inspired by who you have to to succeed at creating some great fantasy art.
Reference images and other photos can help too, so watch out for these in your world of searching for inspiration.
And last of all third, Set yourself a schedule for your art, plan ahead and work on everything that you create, but don't over work existing drawings, as this will become too populated with line marks and just produce rather muddy results, always try and find your way of knowing when to stop drawing.
An overworked drawing may not look right, but you also waste time doing this, you want to maximize your time by drawing more instead of going over pencil lines again or adding unnessecary detail.
Always try and stick to these three main principals in everything that you draw and you will be fine for fantasy art.
