Dark Poem: A Skulls Death

 A Skulls Death

The skulls upon my table stare With sunken eyes and grinning teeth; They seem to say, "We know you there, And what your thoughts and fancies be."
They tell me of the grave, and show The worm that gnaws the mouldering bone; They tell me of the worms that know When life's last sands are nearly run.
They whisper of the tomb, and say, "Your body shall soon moulder there; Your soul shall fly to realms of day, Or sink to realms of endless care."
They say, "Our eyes have seen the dead, And watched the worm its work pursue; We've seen the soul depart and fled, And left the body in the tomb."
They tell me of the last dread day, When all the dead shall rise again; When all the world shall stand to pay The awful debt of sin and pain.
They say, "Prepare, for you shall stand Before the Judge, to answer all; Your deeds shall be weighed in the balance, And your eternal doom befall."
Oh, then, prepare to meet thy doom, And make thy peace with God above; For death is coming, and the tomb Awaits thee, and the worm of love
